Remembering Ysobel

Our PlayDNA family Portrait is a lasting memory to our daughter

Rich and Philippa Rice-Grubb have always been interested in anything new and ‘geeky’ so were intrigued when PlayDNA Founder Dr Samantha Decombel got in touch to ask them if they would like to be one of the first to have their DNA Portraits done. “Samantha was after a family to help highlight the heritable nature of her novel DNA Portraits and knew this would be just the sort of thing we love!” said Rich. “We had just had our first child Ysobel at the time and were excited to see what genes we had both passed on to her.”

Not long after this Rich and Philippa received the devastating news that their then 8-month old daughter had terminal cancer. Although obviously distraught, they decided to still go ahead their family DNA Portrait. “We felt it would allow any future children we had to see what they had in common with their big sister and be a way to enable us to have a family portrait with all of us there,” said Philippa. “It is also a lasting memory a little different from all the other photographs we had.”

Ysobel sadly passed away in September 2010. Her little brother Sam arrived in August 2011 and was soon added to their family DNA Portrait.

“The process of providing the DNA samples was so simple and non-invasive - we managed to get a sample from Sam when he was just 4-months old.” said Philippa.  “When we received the artwork it was fascinating to see that Ysobel’s eyes would have remained blue whilst Sam’s will turn brown eventually.  It was not a great surprise to me to see that Rich did not have a good long-term memory!”

“The communication from PlayDNA throughout has been exceptional, and they have provided help with choosing the right finish and colour combination for us - a difficult task with so many options available!  The quality of the artwork is excellent, and the explanations of each trait are easy to understand but very informative.  All in all we have been consistently impressed with the professionalism, service and products provided by PlayDNA.  We would have no hesitation recommending them to anyone!”

“We are looking forward to adding more DNA portraits as our family grows and to even expand and include grandparents - the beginning of a truly geeky family tree!”
